Dr. Alper is a retired podiatric physician and a well-respected public health leader. Currently he serves as Emeritus Surgical staff at Mt. Auburn Hospital and is a member of the Leadership Board of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in New England and has served as President for over 20 years. Additionally, he is an elected member of the Board of Trustees of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). Dr. Alper also served as Chair of the Belmont (MA) Board of Health for 30 years and he currently sits on the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards (MAHB).

Since his retirement, Dr. Alper has focused on limb amputation prevention and forming collaborations between medical societies in the Diabetes, Podiatry and Vascular industries. He currently serves on the Boards of the Wound Care Collaborative Community (WCCC), the Alliance for Woundcare Stakeholders, the Foot Ankle Health section of the American Public Health Assn. Dr. Alper was inducted into the Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine’s Hall of Fame in 2021. He is a noted speaker and writer on a variety of podiatric topics including articles published in Prevention, Health Journal, and Walking magazines, as well as various webinars and podcasts.

Dr. Loan Lam is the Medical Director of Wound Services at United Vein and Vascular Centers. She graduated from Rice University, received her medical degree from Barry University, and completed her podiatric surgical residency at Yale New Haven Health System in New Haven, CT. She is certified in wound, hyperbaric medicine, and lymphedema therapy. She has authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals, presented numerous wound conference research posters, is a PI for multiple clinical research trials, and is a national and international speaker on behalf of several organizations. 

Dr. Lam is a member of the American Vein and Lymphatic Society, National Lymphedema Network, Wound Healing Society, Wound Care Collaborative Community, American Professional Wound Care Association, and Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing. She is a long-time volunteer and board member of the American Cancer Society.

She also serves on the board of the Save a Leg, Save a Life Foundation.

Besides medicine, her wonderful family, multiple pets, and family farm, her other loves include running races and playing amateur hockey.

Steven Abramowitz, MD, is Chair of Vascular Surgery for MedStar Health and a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. As a board-certified vascular surgeon, he specializes in the treatment of aortic disease including aneurysms and dissection, venous occlusive disease, carotid artery disease, and peripheral arterial disease including critical limb ischemia and claudication through the use of endovascular and open surgical techniques.

Dr. Abramowtiz's clinical interests include central venous occlusive disease, aortic aneurysmal disease, vascular access for hemodialysis, peripheral vascular disease, and limb salvage. His research interests currently include vascular surgery education, iliocaval reconstruction, and the treatment of critical limb ischemia.

Dr. Abramowitz received his medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in integrated vascular surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center before joining MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Abramowitz is the only physician at MedStar Washington Hospital Center performing endovascular iliocaval reconstruction, a two-stage minimally invasive reconstructive technique that has been paramount in the treatment of patients diagnosed with vena caval stenosis and central venous occlusive disease. Central venous occlusion is a debilitating disease, which, if left untreated, results in limb laceration and chronic limb ischemia.

Dr. Abramowitz is an advocate for the improvement of postoperative recovery for patients receiving radial artery catheterization procedures. These improvements will help individuals being treated for venous disease heal faster, allowing them to walk sooner after surgery. He is also an advocate for finding ways to incorporate minimally invasive techniques into open surgery in order to reduce healing times as well as the exposure that comes with open surgical procedures.

Interventional radiologist Constantino Peña, MD, joined the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute team in 2005. Previously, he was director of interventional radiology at Mercy Hospital in Miami. During his years there, he also was a clinical fellow in radiology at Harvard Medical School, and later an instructor of radiology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Peña received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University, and his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. He then completed an internship in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a residency in diagnostic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he served as chief resident.
